Empowering health equity, mental wellbeing, and work-life balance for African and Afro-descendant women through community-led health literacy

On the Ground in Kenya

How ADWIN, Diáspora Mundi, and Sanofi Are Rethinking Health Equity

Over the last three years, Diáspora Mundi has assumed an increasingly relevant role in promoting literacy in different fields, across African communities, particularly among socially and economically vulnerable populations that often remain excluded from access to reliable scientific, medical, and educational information. Through a multidisciplinary and community-centered approach integrating biomedical sciences, public health, and social science perspectives, Diáspora Mundi has worked to strengthen community empowerment, informed decision-making, and equitable participation also in health-related initiatives.

This integrated vision has been instrumental in establishing a strategic collaboration with the African and African-descendant Women Impact Network (ADWIN) and the pharmaceutical company Sanofi. The complementarity between the three entities has created a particularly strong framework for action: Diáspora Mundi contributes scientific expertise, community engagement, and culturally grounded health literacy initiatives; ADWIN brings experience in advocacy, mentorship, women’s empowerment, and mobilization across African communities; and Sanofi contributes its longstanding commitment to global health innovation, patient-centered care, and support for sustainable health ecosystems. Together, these capacities allow the development of interventions that are scientifically rigorous, socially responsive, and operationally scalable.

This collective effort to address the structural barriers underlying mistrust, exclusion, and limited understanding of clinical trials recently started in Kenya, where community-based initiatives are being implemented to demystify clinical research and strengthen public awareness of its potential risks, benefits, and ethical safeguards.

By translating complex scientific concepts into culturally relevant dialogues, this partnership promotes a clear understanding of patient rights and ethical participation in research. Simultaneously, by addressing misinformation, stigma, and fear frequently associated with clinical trials, these initiatives foster more equitable and sustainable models of participation, ensuring that communities are not passive recipients of research, but informed and engaged actors within the scientific process. Ultimately, this collaborative model reinforces the principle that meaningful innovation in global health can only be achieved when scientific advancement is accompanied by trust, inclusion, and community empowerment.

In April 2026, the Founder Members of ADWIN and Diáspora Mundi participated in the Global Conversations & Connections (GCC) Summit held in Accra, Ghana, and organized by OneWe Reach, which mission is to transform life sciences industry through innovation capable of generating meaningful impact on global health.

Invited by Sanofi to communicate the collaborative project being developed, represented in the meeting by the Executive Director and Africa Regional Lead, their participation reaffirmed a shared commitment to strengthening Africa-led research ecosystems, where communities are no longer viewed as passive recipients of science, but as empowered stakeholders and active architects of their own health futures. The session entitled “Architects of Equity: Reimagining the Clinical Trial Landscape in Africa” highlighted the urgent need to position Africa as a global hub for ethical, inclusive, and innovative clinical trials, while reinforcing the understanding that meaningful scientific progress can only be achieved when local realities, knowledge, and community voices are genuinely integrated into the research process and decision-making strategies.
